Do you still consider your gallery's site of secondary importance?

Have a look at how top galleries proceed. You may think a web site is a futility for these 'powerhouses'.

They certainly don't need their gallery's sites to build their presence in the art world. They participate at all important art fairs, their artists are searched after solicited by all top museums and biennials. They function at top level all year round and you know what?

Their gallery sites are top notch too: up-to-date 24/7 with all the information one need about their program, roster, bios and pictures to download (archives included), staff to contact, etc.

Easy enough for these galleries on top. Resources, staff or specialized input aren't a problem.
It all seems obvious from the outside.

They have tons of money to spend

True, some of these websites cost a small fortune to develop and build. But the fact is that you don't need the bells & whistles of these 'high performance' gallery sites to build a reputation or a web presence, on the contrary.

The more features there are, the more complex it is to manage and maintain a site.

Basically, a web site is about information. The information you present is more important than the latest technological tricks. You won’t be popeyed to find them both on these top sites, nothing to be surprised off, because ...

They have a vast staff and even a in-house web designers unit

You know what it takes to come up with up-to-date information about your roster, present quality pictures, keep up with bios and news items ... . It represents an impressive workload for any gallery.

So, obviously top galleries work with a dedicated staff to follow up on the web presence of the dozens of artists in their roster. You can’t beat them on this level either.

Bottom line and your best option is to be able to work on your gallery's site yourself. Not to save on staff, or money ... but to learn hands-on to 'work' with this tool or even better to 'master' it to get the most out of it.

They are already omnipresent on the web

Correct once more. It's easy to maintain a solid online reputation this way. They are much more talked about than most galleries. Their artists being constantly in the headlines of the art world, they get thousands of visitors so they could even easily minimize their resources and reassign them to other initiatives.

And yet, notwithstanding all these competitive advantages, these top galleries never hold back and continue to improve their gallery's sites day in day out.

You know why?

Because they remark day in day out that competition in the global art gallery world is growing fiercer and that they need to secure their top presence 24/7 without restriction.

They are very well aware that even on their level collectors happily hop on and off from gallery to gallery based on the information they discover first on the gallery's sites.

But most important of all, they know that there is an upcoming generation of art enthusiasts who live and act on and by the web. Young, upcoming collectors who are most of the time better informed than the gallery owners they contact and deal with online.

People who rank galleries not only by the quality of their roster but also by the way a gallery deals with its online community, serving them happily with dedicated information.

They want to win these young, upcoming collectors

Don't be mistaken, top galleries are fully prepared. They have their content strategy for the new generation worked out, their detailed web marketing plan ready, their editorial calendar spelled out before the gallery season starts.

They have funnels programmed to lead these speedy visitors where they want them go on their gallery's site and they monitor their analytics stats like a broker follows up the stock market, ready to adjust their site's content on the spot.

It's easy for galleries on top ...

Stop. You could easily come up with dozens of other objections. Fact is that these top galleries need even less than others to invest that much in their web presence.

If they continue to invest to stay on top, there must be an ultimate reason, a unique factor justified by the return generated. Otherwise they would back off, do like most galleries and set up a little portfolio site that is updated with every opening and that's it.

While you continue to neglect your gallery site's potential to leverage your presence in the art gallery world, powerhouse galleries will gladly demonstrate the contrary.

Maybe it's time to follow their example before they are light years ahead.
